Our Mission

 At Theraputic Driving, our mission is to guide you in your journey to remain independent and safe with community access and driving. Living Life Fully! 

Who we work with

We provide services to individuals who have been questioned about their safety behind the wheel by family, a doctor or following a change in their health. 

Common diagnoses commonly in need of services:

  • Cerebral Vascular Disease
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Traumatic Brain Injury 
  • Degenerative Muscle Disease 
  • Concussion Dementia
  • Autism
  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Attention Deficit Disorder
  • Peripheral Neuropathy
  • Amputee Aphasia
  • Recent Surgery/Illness
  • Long COVID
  • Anxiety
  • Frequent Falls 
  • Injury from car accident
  • PTSD 

Referrals

 Physician referrals are required to schedule an appointment. All clients will need a comprehensive clinical assessment which breaks down and assesses the skills required for safe operation of a motor vehicle including: motor coordination, strength, reaction times and reflexes, visual skills, cognitive skills, behavioral and sensory skills.   

Evaluations

  Behind the wheel Driving Evaluations will be provided as indicated and will include adaptive driving equipment if needed (requires an active driver license or permit). All services include objective interventions to meet the needs of the individual.

 Including the doctor at the start of this journey will allow for a more dynamic and accurate assessment.  Your past history is critically important to understand how best to assist you with reaching your goal of driving following an illness or injury.

Comprehensive Clinical Driving Assessment

 The assessment process is between 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours and includes review of physical, visual, cognitive, behavioral and sensory issues associated with the skills needed to safely operate a motor vehicle.   A full report follows.  This assessment is shared with the consumer and referring physician.

OUTCOMES can include:

  • Advance to a behind the wheel trial
  • Recommend further treatment
  • Possible recommendation to medical professional to help meet DMV criteria
  • Need for driving instruction
  • Assist with retirement from driving

Services are by Appointment ONLY

  • Payment is required before services can be provided
  • Services offered in your home to start the driving process in a familiar location
  • Super Bills are available for "possible" out-of-network reimbursement 
  • Services provided by Licensed Occupational Therapist/Licensed Driving Instructor
  • Owner is a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist
  • Evening and Weekend Services on Request
  • Service area is Connecticut and Rhode Island
